  5.     DIED. Hanson Baldwin, 88, veteran military analyst of the New
  6. York Times who won a 1943 Pulitzer Prize for his reporting of
  7. the war in the Pacific; in Roxbury, Conn. An Annapolis graduate
  8. who served in the Navy during the 1920s, Baldwin joined the
  9. Times in 1929. In 1937 he warned of America's unreadiness for
  10. war, and in 1941 he predicted "another quick and decisive
  11. German victory" over the Soviet Union. In 1965 Baldwin advocated
  12. sending up to a million American men to fight in Vietnam while
  13. acknowledging that such a course would cause the war to be
  14. "long, nasty and wearing"; the Times ran an editorial denouncing
  15. his hawkish stand.
